Out of your airplane window you spy a huge expanse of bright turquoise water, interrupted only by vast coral reefs teeming with fish and sea turtles. Then you spot little islands blanketed in lush greenery. Luxury private villas jut off the islands out over the water, providing holidaymakers with the ultimate in indulgence. Yep, you’re landing in the beautiful tropical archipelago of Fiji. The place where luxury and natural beauty are everywhere you look. Secret Beaches Renowned for white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and stunning sunsets, Fiji has beach life down to a fine art. And with over 332 islands in the country, there’s an outrageous number of beaches to explore. Cove Beach on Turtle Island is one of the most famous, and is perfect for a private champagne picnic. You can also sea kayak, snorkel and swim. Then there’s the secluded and intimate Matamanoa Beach – a horseshoe-shaped white beach. But you can’t forget Natadola Beach, located 40 minutes from the main island, Nadi, which has been voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches.
Fine Dining The dining scene comes to the party, too – there are numerous top-notch venues that rival the fine dining restaurants in major cities across the world. Flying Fish and Ports O’ Call, both in the Sheraton, are two such venues that impress both with their atmosphere and exquisite food. Ports O’ Call is one of Fiji’s first and best fine dining restaurants, offering table-side silver service and a premium wine list – here, they pull out all the stops. Meanwhile Flying Fish is a contemporary al fresco venue by the resort’s lagoon pool where you can catch the stupendous Fijian sunsets while dining on fresh seafood.
Rent a Whole Island Make like the rich and famous and rent out a whole island to yourself. And while this may sound like a totally unachievable holiday goal for a mere mortal, there are many private island resorts that you can visit just for the day that don’t cost an arm and a leg. And for all you romantics, you can also take a trip out to a private beach for a champagne picnic or sumptuous dinner under the stars.
Helicopter or Seaplane Flight Travel in style and take a scenic helicopter or seaplane flight to see the beautiful islands from above. You won’t get a better vantage point of Fiji’s tropical archipelago than a bird’s-eye view. Take in the scenery and maybe even find a private beach to land on. You can get both helicopter and seaplane flights from Nadi on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu , straight to the four-star private resort Castaway Island in just ten minutes.
Exotic Marine Life A trip to Fiji wouldn’t be complete without a swim, snorkel or dive in warm South Pacific Ocean. And when you can see dolphins, sea turtles, colourful coral and a vast array of exotic fish, why wouldn’t you? There are numerous boat trips you can take to isolated islands away from other tourists to enjoy a patch of ocean all to yourself. Rainbow Reef and Great Astrolabe Reef are two of the main snorkelling spots, but there are countless other reefs and pristine lagoons just waiting to be explored.
Swim-up Bars Where better to enjoy a drink on a paradise island than at a swim-up bar? And in Fiji there are more swim-up bars than coconut trees – OK, that’s not true but you get the gist. Take a semi-submerged pew in the warm water and sip on fruity alcoholic concoctions with an inordinate number of cocktail umbrellas and sliced fruits clinging to the rim. With the sun shining down on you and that tropical breeze blowing through the nearby coconut trees, it’s pretty idyllic. Happy hour has never felt so good.
